sivmatel I then uninstalled and deleted the ‘SigmaTel HD Audio’ drivers and then downloaded the latest drivers again from Dell. I got this by going to the device manager and telling it to get the driver from Windows Update.

I installed it in a Latitude D which is the business version of the Inspiron and has much the same drivers. Install the registry file and then the audio driver.
